Pottery and ceramics is a medium that I wish more people engaged with. It is a fascinating medium to work with that has usability in ones life beyond just looking cool.
Advice
- Just keep making stuff, even if you personally feel like it looks bad. There is naturally a gap between what you have envisioned in your head and the end product. Diligent practice will begin to inch this gap closer together.
- I prefer using a kickwheel over an electric wheel. The speed at which the wheel turns feels less robotic than pushing on a pedal.
- Of paramount importance is wedging the clay and centering it on the wheel. Failing to do those two things adequately results is a wobbly start that dooms your project.
- Dunk-glazing is fast and easy, but brush painting shouldn’t be neglected. If you get the viscosity of your glaze right, it will look good without having visible brush strokes.
